A bold call for change has been made by the head of a Labour-affiliated union, Maryam Eslamdoust, who believes Angela Rayner should replace Keir Starmer as leader. Eslamdoust warns that the current leadership could lead Labour to a devastating defeat against Reform UK in the upcoming elections.
In an exclusive interview with The Guardian, Eslamdoust, the general secretary of the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA), urged for a female leader, highlighting the lack of representation for women in the Labour party compared to the Tories. She believes Rayner is a strong and credible candidate, capable of leading the party to a brighter future.
"It's time for a change, and Angela Rayner embodies the fresh start Labour needs," Eslamdoust stated.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Eslamdoust's call comes at a critical time for Starmer, who has faced a series of setbacks and resignations from key staff members. The general secretary believes these poor political judgments, coupled with the current economic and geopolitical instability, have eroded trust in the current leadership.
"The party needs a leader who can inspire confidence and unity, and that leader is Angela Rayner," she added.
However, Rayner's spokesperson quickly dismissed the idea, stating there is no vacancy and that the focus should be on unity and delivering for the public.
Starmer, determined to restore stability, has secured the backing of the cabinet, but many within the party still anticipate a leadership challenge, potentially after the upcoming by-elections or local elections in May.

While Rayner has gained support from many union leaders with her employment rights agenda, she has also faced opposition from Unite, one of the largest unions, due to her stance on the Birmingham bin strikes. This internal division highlights the challenges Rayner would face if she were to take over the leadership.
