The Pittsburgh Steelers' head coaching search just took an interesting turn, and it might surprise you. Word on the street is, their very first interview request is for a relatively unproven candidate: the Los Angeles Rams' pass game coordinator, Nate Scheelhaase. This news, broken by ESPN's Adam Schefter, has the NFL world buzzing.

According to Schefter's report on X (formerly Twitter), the Steelers aren't alone in their interest. Baltimore, Cleveland, and Las Vegas have also reportedly requested interviews with the rising star. The fact that multiple teams are vying for his attention speaks volumes about his potential.
So, what makes Scheelhaase so appealing? A big part of it is his connection to Rams head coach Sean McVay, a known offensive mastermind. Scheelhaase has spent the last two seasons learning at the feet of one of the best in the business. However, as mentioned earlier, the elephant in the room is his limited NFL coaching resume. He only has two years under his belt at the professional level.
Before joining the Rams in 2024, Scheelhaase built his coaching foundation in the college ranks for eight seasons. He's a former quarterback himself, having played for the University of Illinois, where he racked up impressive stats: 8,568 passing yards and 57 touchdowns. After his playing days, he immediately transitioned into coaching with his alma mater in 2015.
He started in football operations before becoming the running backs coach during that same season. He then climbed the ladder, becoming an offensive assistant for the Fighting Illini in 2016 and 2017. From there, he joined Matt Campbell's staff at Iowa State – Campbell is now the head coach at Penn State, showcasing the coaching pedigree Scheelhaase is associated with.
At Iowa State, Scheelhaase wore many hats, serving as running backs coach, wide receivers coach, run game coordinator, quarterbacks coach, passing game coordinator, and ultimately, offensive coordinator under Campbell. He clearly demonstrated versatility and a willingness to learn different facets of the game.
And this is the part most people miss... While at Iowa State, Scheelhaase played a crucial role in the development of current San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, a testament to his ability to mentor and elevate players. Purdy went from being "Mr. Irrelevant" (the last player drafted) to a legitimate NFL star, and Scheelhaase played a part in that transformation.
After the 2023 season, Scheelhaase took the leap to the NFL, joining McVay's staff as an offensive assistant and passing game specialist. He quickly impressed, earning a promotion to passing game coordinator for the 2025 season. In that role, he contributed to quarterback Matthew Stafford’s stellar year, where Stafford threw for nearly 5,000 yards and 46 touchdowns – numbers that put him in the MVP conversation.
At just 35 years old, Scheelhaase is undeniably young for a head coaching candidate. The lack of extensive NFL experience, particularly the absence of coordinator experience at the pro level, raises legitimate concerns. But, he comes from a respected coaching tree under McVay and boasts significant experience at the college level, working with different positions and coordinating offenses.
"He's a stud," McVay said of Scheelhaase in early 2025 after promoting him. "He'll be involved in all parts of the game plan. I think this guy's a special coach and I'm not going to take for granted the time I have with him. I thought it was cool that he chose to stay with us with some other opportunities he had. That meant a lot to me...He is a rising star, without a doubt." McVay's high praise carries weight, considering his track record of developing successful coaches.
