Unstable Ice Conditions in Minnesota: A Challenge for Anglers
The unpredictable weather in Central Minnesota has created a tricky situation for ice anglers, according to Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News. The freeze-thaw cycle has caused ice to shift, creating heaves and even opening up spots on lakes. Schmitt reports that permanent fish houses in the southern and western regions of the state have fallen through, and there have been concerns about holes forming on Big Stone Lake near Ortonville.
Ice Conditions and Safety
Schmitt advises anglers to check with resorts for up-to-date ice conditions, as they monitor these changes daily. Despite the challenges, Schmitt remains confident in using his ATV on area lakes but avoids his pickup. He believes the ice has remained stable over the past week but refrains from making new ice.
Fishing Reports
The weather has also impacted fishing. Walleye fishing is still productive on Red Lake and Mille Lacs, while Central Minnesota experiences average conditions. Schmitt recommends using a dead stick, bobber lines, and a hook with a minnow. Crappie fishing has been excellent, especially during low-light periods. Schmitt has also had success catching blue gills near weed lines and in deeper basins, favoring pan fishing at the moment.
Regulatory Changes and Sonar Technology
The Minnesota DNR is considering a significant change to walleye limits, reducing them from 6 to 4. Schmitt explains that this decision is driven by the advent of forward-facing sonar technology, which has made walleye fishing more accessible. The DNR is currently in the comment period, which ends on March 5th, and any changes won't take effect until 2027. Schmitt predicts that omni sonar will soon render forward-facing sonar obsolete.
Trout Fishing Season Opener
The trout fishing season begins in Minnesota on Saturday, offering excellent opportunities. Schmitt highlights the northern and northeastern regions of the state as prime spots for trout fishing. He mentions the Crosby area's mine pits, known for their abundant trout population. Despite the lack of widespread attention, trout fishing through the ice is an enjoyable experience.
