A true legend in the world of horse racing is calling it quits after an incredible 54-year career. Des McDonogh, the man behind the legendary hurdler Monksfield, has announced his retirement, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be etched in the history of the sport.
But here's where it gets controversial... McDonogh's decision to step away from training comes at a time when the stress of racing is at an all-time high. With age catching up, he felt it was time to hang up his boots and enjoy the fruits of his labor.
Monksfield, a dual Champion Hurdle hero, was the star of McDonogh's stable. This horse's career was nothing short of remarkable, winning three Aintree Hurdles and back-to-back Champion Hurdles in the late 1970s. In an era dominated by the likes of Sea Pigeon and Night Nurse, Monksfield regularly stole the show with his memorable duels.
What's even more impressive is that Monksfield was purchased for a mere 740gns as a yearling. He finished as the runner-up to Night Nurse in the 1977 Champion Hurdle, but came back stronger the following year, denying his rival a hat-trick and securing the title for himself. McDonogh, at just 31 years old, witnessed this triumph firsthand.
And this is the part most people miss... Monksfield's success continued, with Dessie Hughes guiding him to victory over Sea Pigeon in the Champion Hurdle a year later. It was a memorable double for McDonogh, who also saw his horse Stranfield win the Supreme Novices' Hurdle earlier that day.
When asked about his decision to retire, McDonogh cited the stress of racing and his age as factors. He reflected on Monksfield's career, highlighting the horse's outstanding record at Cheltenham and Aintree.
"His record at Cheltenham was second, second, first, first, and second. When he was beaten in 1980, we knew the course had been changed, and that made it harder to complete the three in a row. Michael Mangan, the owner, believed a champion should defend his title on the same course. We had some great days at Cheltenham and Aintree. Winning three Aintree Hurdles, including the day Red Rum won his third National, was superb."
Monksfield's first Champion Hurdle victory was McDonogh's highlight. He described it as "out of this world."
Another top-class hurdler for McDonogh was Herbert United, who achieved his biggest success in the 1986 Irish Champion Hurdle. McDonogh's last Graded win came in 2014 with Fiscal Focus, and he also landed the €80,000 Rybo Handicap Hurdle in 2021 with Hearts Are Trumps.
McDonogh's family has also made significant contributions to the sport. His son, Declan, has been one of Ireland's top Flat jockeys for the last 25 years, even becoming champion in 2006. His late wife, Helen, was a groundbreaking female jockey and a pivotal part of their success.
"Declan has had a wonderful career, and we're so proud of him. I was fortunate to have my daughter Shona and my late wife Helen by my side. Helen was the lifeblood of our yard."
McDonogh's last winner came at Down Royal last month, with Verbal Sparring taking the handicap hurdle.
